Dredge Yard in Dredging Summit & Expo 2014 of WEDA

Dredge Yard participate at WEDA

Dredge Yard participated in the Western Dredging Association (WEDA) and Texas University’s Dredging Summit and Expo 2014 that took place at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada.

The participants of the event were mostly leading organizations in dredging and port industry, maritime professionals and experts on environmental issues that exchanged the knowledge in fields related to dredging, marine engineering and environment.

Dredge Yard’s representatives were Basel Yousef, the CEO and Iulia Berchiu, the Marketing Manager of the company.

Two solutions

“Expanding the dredging world” was the theme for the event in which Basel Yousef has covered the “Fuel Saving Solutions” topic that is one of the most debated subject among all the industries.

Dredge Yard presented two solutions for solving major problems, one of them being the inflexibility of the dredge ball joint and the other one being the blockage of the flow.

Blockage

To solve the inflexibility of the ball joint that occurs due to the rustweld that follows after rusty surfaces, Dredge Yard presented a new design called bearing ball joint. This dredge component is featured with additional bearing liners allowing the ball joint to move easier and to have less friction against tilting moments.

For the blockage of the flow that is created by the ball joint when it is tilted up to its maximum bend angle, Dredge Yard presented a new design having a concave ball liner that allows the mixture to flow easier and have no blockage.

Blockage of the mixture results in local increase of flow speed that has a positive effect in pressure drop.

This new ball joint is producing less friction than conventional ball joint and is saving fuel for the entire dredge operation as the most power is consumed by discharging mixture over the dredge pipe line.

Interview with Dredge Yards marketing manager

Maritime & Ports published an interview with Iulia Berchiu, Dredge Yards Marketing Manager. She talks about the challenges she faces as a woman working in a male dominated industry.

Dredge Yards latest techniques

During the interview Iulia talks about the biggest projects Dredge Yard was involved in so far in the Middle East. She later explains how many dredging and mining parts and components are offered through the Dubai office. And Iluia even reveals which latest technologies Dredge Yard is working on. In conclusion we can read about what sets Dredge Yard apart from its competitors.

Iulia about working at Dredge Yard:

“It is a company with well-defined goals, which seeks to make a difference in the dredging and mining market. It is also a company that is consistently helping its employees.”

Dredge Yard in the PIANC World Congress, San Francisco

Participation in 33rd PIANC World Congress

Dredge Yard has announced their participation at the 33rd PIANC World Congress (2014) to be held in San Francisco, California.

PIANC World Congress, The World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure, is the forum that brings together professionals around the world to provide expert advice on cost effective, reliable and sustainable infrastructures to facilitate the growth of waterborne transport.

Sponsoring

The dredging and mining equipment manufacturer Dredge Yard, took a lead role in sponsoring the Congress. For 5 consecutive days they will be part of the experts that will present and discuss the development of shallow and deep-draft navigation issues, dredging and dredged material disposal, navigation and port infrastructure, recreational navigation and related environmental matters.

Congresses are held every 4 years in one of PIANC’S member countries. The U.S. Section of PIANC selected San Francisco as the location for this year’s Congress for many reasons but mainly because there are so many “navigation-related” things to see and explore.

Large dredge valves supplied to Van Oord

Dredge Yard successfully handed over several large dredge valves to Van Oord, a leading contractor in dredging, marine engineering and offshore projects.

The valves have an inner diameter of 1100 and 1600 mm. They control the flow of water and sand in the suction and discharge pipes from the trailing suction hopper dredgers.

Inspection large dredge valves

The dredge valves are produced in Dredge Yard’s facilities in Turkey by using latest production technologies. Additionally, to ensure high quality, they underwent tests under 12 bars. Van Oord’s representatives also inspected the valves during and after production.

Dredging up the future with Maritime & Ports

General Manager of Dredge Yard, Basel Yousef, shares with Maritime & Ports his perspective on the future of the dredging market.  In addition he explains what led to a growing demand of dredge equipment in the Middle East.

He believes that as a dredging equipment supplier, Dredge Yard has been quick to capitalize on the growing demand in the Middle East and set up its Dubai office a couple of years ago to better serve the region.

Dredging future

New projects have been launched in Middle East recently while other ports have got extensions or modifications. The huge size of those projects requires the biggest size dredgers deployed by local and abroad contractors.

He also adds that in recent future a lot of new systems have been established to prevent pollution. Here is the case of greaseless ball joint, the latest development of Dredge Yard, which connects the long and heavy dredging pipes together without the need of grease that spills out in the water.

Dredge Yard tests & delivers bow coupling system

Dredge Yard bow couplings

Dredge Yard delivered two bow couplings for the size of 600mm for European dredging company. Those bow couplings will be used on two existing dredgers for the quick coupling and dis-coupling.

Dredge Yard Facility Dubai

They were designed, produced and tested for working pressure of 10 bars in Dredge Yard’s facilities in Dubai. These couplings are provided with a hydraulically operated locking system for quick as well as easy locking and releasing of the discharge lines offering the possibility to reduce time between phases of the dredging activity.

The bow couplings are equipped with duplex ball to prevent rust and achieve wear performance. To clamp the ball in the bow coupling casing two half-moon bars are provided around the gland enforced by one hydraulic cylinder. Inside the ball a wear resistant ball liner is provided to increase the life time of the coupling.

Moreover, two hydraulically operated locking pins are provided for securing the locking clamps during high pressure discharging, making them more reliable during operations. In addition, major parts which are affected during operations can be easily repaired or replaced.

With Dredge Yard’s improved locking system design, it’s more reliable, less time consuming and hence, cost effective.

They are available in a wide range of sizes from 400 mm to 1200 mm with working pressure between 10 to 30 bars.

Dredge Yard develops new design for water ball joint

Water ball joint 700

Dredge Yard has successfully delivered water ball joint 700 to Baku, the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, as well as the largest city on the Caspian Sea.

These ball joints have been produced by using new innovative design developed by Dredge Yard’s team of engineers which makes it much more economical and suitable for transporting water.

Water ball joint 700 mm is suitable for 10 bar working pressure and has been tested up to 18 bars. They have a tilting angle 15 degrees to all directions. The grease grooves are provided in the case which makes the lubrication work much easier and effective than before.

Design

A new design of rubber seal is provided in the case to make the water ball joint tight even at higher pressure than working pressure. All the ball joints have been produced in Dredge Yard’s facilities by using latest production technologies and casting expertise.

To assure high quality and hence, better life, all the ball joints underwent through thorough tests and inspections during and after production. They were delivered in 4 batches by trucks directly from Dredge Yard’s facilities to Baku in Azerbaijan, to ensure shortest delivery time.

Dredge Yard is currently producing heavy duty water ball joint for I.D. 1200 mm using the same design principle and new sealing design.
