Dredge Yard is expanding its business and will relocate to new headquarters and assembly hall to better accommodate its clients.

We are excited to announce that we are relocating to our new headquarters and assembly hall by August 1st, 2019. Our new office is located in Rotterdam South, Netherlands at the following address:

Brielselaan 69, 3081 AA Rotterdam, Netherlands

In the wake of new product development and team expansion in 2019, we are relocating closer to the industry of shipbuilding and dredging. Our new headquarters overlook the river Maas, and offer a glimpse of constant shipping traffic in and out of the largest port in Europe here in Rotterdam.

This relocation marks a significant step in the company’s development. Aside from bringing Dredge Yard closer to its industry, the new headquarters will also house a big facility for product development and assembly.

Dredge Yard will now assemble, test and supply all equipment from its Rotterdam facility.

Therefore, we will now assemble, test and supply all equipment from our own Rotterdam facility. This will allow for even better control of assembly process, quality control and quick, reliable product testing right outside the office windows.

Closer to our clients

The modern headquarters are located in Rotterdam South, just 4 kilometres from the city centre. This location will offer our clients easy access to the facility. We will now provide the possibility to take a look at assembly process, newest developments, and equipment in stock.

Furthermore, this change will allow us to offer shorter lead times, as assembly and testing of products will take place at our central location. Finally, equipment transport will be more convenient, quicker and cheaper for the EU clients.

Dredge Yard’s relocation marks a change in company’s organizational structure compared to the previous office by Rotterdam central station without an assembly hall. Yet, the two locations are only 4.8 kilometres and less than 20 minute drive apart. Dredge Yard’s new location is still conveniently central and easy to reach by public transport or car.

In the near future, Dredge Yard’s projects include assembly and delivery of running projects from the new facility. Additionally, new ECO dredgers will be built in stock in the new facility to accommodate other clients.

Dredge Yard at Flood and Coast Exhibition & Conference in the UK

At Dredge Yard, we constantly seek new and innovative ideas. Therefore, we will be attending the upcoming Flood & Coast Conference at Telford International Center, UK from 18th-20th of June 2019. The conference focuses on “Risk, Resilience & Response in a Changing Climate”. The event gathers professionals from the Environment Agency, local authorities, water companies, research academics and more. Due to constant environmental and societal developments such as climate change, population growth and pollution, dredging is becoming an increasingly important protective process. For example, between 1995 and 2015, flooding accounted for 47% of all weather disasters, affecting 2.3 billion people (UNISDR). Dredging can be an effective form of flood prevention, especially when it occurs due to gathered sediments and debris.

Due to natural weathering and erosion, sand, silt and debris are constantly washed downstream. Sediments gradually fill up rivers, channels or canals making them very shallow and creating blockage. As a result, waterways become inaccessible to ships. Furthermore, blockage can cause water to flow over the river banks, flooding the surrounding area. Therefore, shallow waters can have major impacts on local businesses and even become a safety hazard to the surrounding residents and wildlife.

While dredging can be an effective tool in flood prevention, it is important to continuously develop existing dredging solutions for improved efficiency and the least environmental disturbance.

Dredge Ball Joints to the Middle East

Dredge Yard successfully delivered 50 heavy duty dredge ball joints to the Middle East for immediate use in the gulf region. These dredge ball joints are suitable for a thick pipe with internal diameter of 750mm at continuous pressure of at least 30 bar.

The ball joints are manufactured at Dredge Yard facilities in collaboration with our partners in the Republic of Turkey. The manufacturing process involves casting and heat treatment of all components, which is followed by machining to the finest tolerances. Some of our dredge ball joint benefits include:

Dredge ball joint testing & quality control

To ensure high quality and durability, all of our ball joints undergo heavy testing and quality control. Dredge Yard team of engineers always supervise the manufacturing and testing process. Therefore, we can guarantee that all parts are delivered in accordance with Dredge Yard specifications and to customer’s satisfaction. Accordingly, each dredge ball joint component is tested both – separately, and in combination with the other parts. This ensures its functionality and interchangeability in the dredging field.

During delivery, dredge ball joints are tested at pressures, which exceed the maximum operating pressure on site. More specifically, several dredge ball joints are statically tested over 30 bar for a duration of one hour.

Additionally, one of the dredge ball joints is tested at a special facility in a so-called dynamic test. During the dynamic test, the dredge ball joint is fully pressurized up to 30 bar, while a movement of the ball joint is created by a hydraulic cylinder. We do this to simulate the forces encountered when in use, and ensure durability of the component under severe conditions.

Finally, dredge ball joints are used by welding the heavy-duty steel pipe to two parts of the ball joint. Thick heavy welds are applied in order to ensure that the complete system withstands the pressure of at least 30 bar and external forces such as currents, waves and wind.

Post purchase support

Following the thorough manufacturing and testing process, we delivered all ball joints to a customer in the Middle East. Ball joints were ordered for immediate use at a dredging project in the gulf region. Dredge Yard service team will follow up with the customer for continuous monitoring and support on the use of dredgers, as well as assist whenever needed.

Dredge valves manufactured & delivered to GCC

Dredge Yard specializes not only in small to medium sized dredgers, but also dredging and mining components. Accordingly, one of our most recent projects involved manufacturing and delivery of dredge valves to a client in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). More specifically, dredge valves of 800 mm internal diameter. They will be used as a replacement of existing valves on board a trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD). These types of dredge valves can be produced for three different working duties varying between 10, 20 and 30 bar according to the client’s requirements and application.

Dredge valves are used to control the flow of water and sand in the suction and discharge pipes of cutter suction dredgers or TSHDs. Due to demanding work function and exposure to abrasive slurry materials, dredge gate valves are highly sophisticated components. Therefore,  it is important to select robust material and high pressure handling capability to ensure proper function and long component life.


All of our components, including dredge valves, are continuously developed and designed by our in-house team of engineers using the latest design software. In this way, we can guarantee high quality and durability of components.

We fabricate dredge valve body from high tensile steel, while the valve’s gate is made of corrosion resistant and hardened steel. These materials protect the valve against rust and wear. Additionally, high quality marine type paint is applied, for conservation of the outer surface, in order to protect the valve against corrosion.

Another special feature of our valves is the steel reinforced rubber seals. This makes the seal very durable, allowing it to handle large amounts of abrasive slurry, as well as to open and close smoothly, even in the toughest working conditions. Additionally, our dredge valves are designed in a way, where no fasteners inside the body can loosen and damage other parts during operation, even in tough conditions.

Aside from using robust materials, we always design easily maintained equipment for long-lasting life. For example, all connections outside the dredge valve body are bolts and nuts that can be easily replaced without damaging any part of the body. Furthermore, two inspection holes on both sides of the dredge valve allow for easy inspection inside the dredge valve body, without the need to dismantle it.

Auger dredger ECO 200 to Hungary

Dredge Yard specializes in small to medium sized dredgers. Our standard equipment is available from stock and can be customized for special projects and applications.

In March, our standard Auger dredger ECO 200 was ordered from stock. Auger ECO 200 is a compact and economic sediment dredger. Due to its precision and low turbidity, it is especially suitable for environmental dredging applications, which involve contaminants. In addition to this, it can also efficiently remove accumulated sediments in water sources such as rivers, streams, harbours or lakes.

Recently, we welcomed our clients to inspect and test their new Auger ECO 200. Some of the functionalities that were inspected during testing are described below.

  • Dredge pump discharge
    The performance of submerged, hydraulically driven dredge pump is checked and the discharge pressure is measured
  • Auger screw rotation
    Auger screw rotation is inspected both – clock wise and counter clock wise at variable speed
  • Hydrostatic stability
    Free board measured at fore end, mid-section and aft end during operation and sailing position
  • Propulsion system
    Performance and testing of forward and backward movement, as well as left and right maneuvering
  • Cabin controls
    All dredging operation controls and cabin controls are checked. This includes flood lights, cabin lights, exhaust fan, wipers, air-condition, etc.

Following a successful inspection, dredger is soon on its way to the client and its final destination.

Dredging is often associated with pollution, contaminated soils, CO2 emissions or other negative environmental impact. Yet, the positive perspective and nature improvements dredging can achieve are often overlooked. The word “dredge” itself is defined as the act of cleaning and clearing “the bed of (a harbour, river, or other area of water) by scooping out mud, weeds, and rubbish with a dredge” by Oxford Dictionary.

Accordingly, dredging is an activity, which to a large extent focuses on improvement of our society, businesses and even the environment itself. Furthermore, due to constant environmental and societal developments such as climate change, population growth and pollution, dredging is becoming an increasingly important protective process.

How can dredging improve the environment?

While there is a variety of dredging objectives, a large range of applications focus on improvement of the environment and nature protection. Some of these applications are discussed below.

Currently, one of the bigger issues that waterways face are polluted and contaminated soils, which become an environmental threat. Contaminated soils can negatively affect the environment and its inhabitants. In this case, environmental dredging is an effective method to remove polluted sediments. The soils must be cleaned in a controlled and precise manner, without spreading the pollutants in the surroundings. Accordingly, dredging solutions are continuously evolved to ensure precise dredging, which will not harm the environment or the operators involved.

Mining operations such as coal or gold mining can produce tailings, which are finely crushed rock and mineral byproducts of the operations. When it comes to dredging equipment – size matters, and bigger is not always better. In the dredging industry – dredger types & sizes vary from one-container-transportable to grandiose vessels, such as the Spartacus. It is immensely important to evaluate project conditions and choose the right equipment for your dredging project. An undersized dredger will not fulfil project requirements and can ultimately lead to additional costs. Choosing oversized equipment can unnecessarily break the budget. Furthermore, naturally, larger equipment requires more power and thus, has higher fuel consumption, which results in increased COemissions. Therefore, aside from increased expenses, choosing oversized equipment can also needlessly harm the environment.

Types of dredging methods

Choosing the right equipment goes hand in hand with the right dredging method. Some dredging methods can be considered more environmentally friendly than others. Thus, it is important to evaluate what is the most sufficient method for both – project requirements and environmental conditions.

Water Injection dredging is one example of the more environmentally friendly dredging solutions. One of the key aspects of this method is the fact that it involves nature itself in the dredging process by using water currents for material transportation. Additionally, water injection dredging does not involve material removal from the ecosystem. This contributes to sustainability of natural ecosystems that are vital in natural waterway processes.

Dredged material as a resource

Whenever dredged material does not involve any pollutants, it should be considered as a valuable resource, which can easily be reused. Dredged, clean sediment can be used for a variety of different applications such as beach nourishment, land reclamation, soil improvement, construction materials and more. Multiple dredging projects with different objectives (e.g. maintenance and capital dredging) are often combined in order to achieve the highest benefit of the project. In this way, the environment is protected from immense impact of unnecessarily many dredging activities. Additionally, if not reused, dredged material is simply disposed of. This is an expensive solution, which can also harm the environment and habitats in the disposal areas.

ECO-friendly equipment

There is a variety of nature-friendly dredging objectives and precautions that can be taken to protect the environment. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that dredging has certain negative impacts, as it is a form of interference with the ecosystem. Due to this, the dredging industry is increasingly focusing on new, innovative and green solutions, which would minimize any harm to the environment.

One of such ECO-friendly solutions is the adaptive auger head. Dredge Yard introduced the adaptive auger head system, which due to a strong suction vacuum, closely follows the ground when dredging. As a result, the adaptive auger head protects the marine animals from entering the suction system. It also causes minimal to no turbidity and accurately removes even the thinnest layers of sediment. Therefore, it is not only protective of the marine animals, but also of the general environment, especially when contaminated sediments are involved.

Additionally, our Auger dredger ECO 200 is equipped with the ECO-friendly system for environmental dredging. However, the adaptive auger head can also be purchased separately to upgrade existing dredgers. Adaptive Auger Head: Environmentally Friendly Solution

At Dredge Yard, we pay special attention to high efficiency and innovative solutions. We do this, to achieve lowest equipment prices, operational costs and minimal impact on the environment. Sustainability and green dredging solutions become increasingly important, as climate and environment are rapidly changing and must be protected. In accordance to this, our team created an innovative dredging solution, which protects the environment – the adaptive auger head. 


The adaptive auger head has two retractable visors placed on the front, and the backside of the auger head. The visors move in and out, according to the shape of the seabed and the depth. This automatic visor movement is enabled by the hydraulic arrangement and pressure settings. See the video below for a thorough explanation of how the adaptive auger head works. 

Benefits of the adaptive auger head

The adaptive auger head achieves a variety of environmental and economic benefits, due to its automatic visor movement along the ground when dredging. Some of the benefits include:

  1. More production of sand in less time. The adaptive visors create a strong suction vacuum by continuously following the ground, which achieves high production rates.
  2. Much less turbidity than with conical (basket) cutter head types. This is achieved due to adaptive visors, which control the material spillage. Low turbidity is an especially big advantage when dredging in contaminated areas, as it protects the environment. 
  3. The adaptive system saves marine life by protecting animals from entering the suction system in the dredger.
  4. This system accurately removes only the necessary layer and ensures an even surface at all depths. Therefore, necessary materials are not removed from the ecosystem.
  5. It is suitable for unmanned dredging, because adaptive visors automatically adjust with the ground. This makes the system very useful for remote controlled dredgers, which operate in areas that are risky for operators.

The adaptive auger head is an especially suitable solution for environmental dredging. As mentioned, the adaptive visors protect the marine life from getting trapped in the dredging system. Additionally, they cause minimal to no turbidity. This characteristic is vital for the ecosystem, especially when contaminated soils are involved. Some of the other advantages of using the adaptive auger head system in environmental or remediation dredging are discussed below. 

  1. Adaptive auger head improves cleanup operations that are specifically aimed at removing contaminated sediments. This is especially important, as contaminants can endanger marine and human life.
  2. Remediation dredging means that the thinnest layers possible are accurately removed. As a result, the least possible quantities of contaminated material are dredged.
  3. Contaminated sediments pose a big risk to human health, the environment and may limit the use of many water bodies. However, treatment of contaminated sediment is costly and secure disposal areas are limited. Therefore, precision dredging offers a viable solution, as it removes the smallest amount possible. 
  4. The adaptive visors enclose the area being dredged. In this way, they prevent sediments from drifting into the surrounding waters.

Aside from environmental dredging, the adaptive auger head can be used for a variety of applications. For example, it is a useful tool in river and canal dredging, water intake cleaning, harbor maintenance and more. 

Overall, not all types of dredging or maintenance have to be very precise. However, certain projects demand environmental society clearance. In such cases, the adaptive auger head adds immense value to your product in terms of both – economic reasons for you and protection of the environment. Water Injection Dredging

Water Injection Dredging: what, when, how?

Water bodies including harbours, ports, canals and rivers carry sediments, which eventually settle on the waterbed and in time, result in siltation. Siltation reduces waterway access for ships, and can lead to flooding. Therefore, regular maintenance dredging is necessary to maintain appropriate water depths and safe navigation. While traditional dredging techniques are an effective solution for removal of accumulated sediments, it can be a costly process, especially for smaller ports and harbours. Water Injection Dredging (WID) is a dredging method, which is considered more environmentally friendly and cost efficient, but requires specific soil and environmental conditions.

WID method involves water injection into the sediments. Therefore, a water injection dredger contains a series of nozzles located on a jetbar, which spray water. In contrast to traditional dredging methods, WID does not involve any suction, pumping or transport of the dredged materials.  More specifically, water injection dredging process can be divided into the following four steps:

  1. Injection: large amount of water is injected at low pressure into the sediments in the bottom of the waterway.
  2. Transition: the injected water loosens the sediments and creates a water and sediment mixture (fluidised soil layer). This layer results in lower density than the sediments, but higher density than that of the surrounding water.
  3. Transport: due to the difference in material densities, the fluidised soil layer is transported through the natural phenomenon of water currents, minimizing the disturbance to the natural ecosystem.
  4. Settlement: once the sediments reach deeper waters they settle down again. This process does not involve removal of materials from their natural ecosystem.

Benefits of Water Injection Dredging

When applicable, water injection dredging features a range of economic and environmental advantages in comparison to more traditional dredging methods. Some of these are listed below:

  1. Water injection dredging does not require additional equipment such as pipelines or boosters. As a result, a water injection dredging project is less complicated, requires less organisation and can be started as soon as the dredger is delivered on site.
  2. Since additional support equipment is not needed, water injection dredging process becomes less costly and does not disturb shipping traffic when in operation.
  3. WID requires very little energy for water injection, in comparison to energy required for heavy material suction and transport. Therefore, fuel consumption of a water injection dredger is low, resulting in low operational costs.
  4. In the right conditions (e.g. water depths, currents, materials), water injection dredgers have high production rates. This leads to shorter project execution time frames and lower costs.

Environmental Impacts of Water Injection Dredging

Aside from the above mentioned time and economy related advantages, water injection dredging is unique for its environmentally friendly characteristics. For example:

  1. This dredging method does not include sediment suction and removal. It uses natural phenomena including water current and gravity as a means of sediment transport. Accordingly, fluidized materials (1-3m thick) travel horizontally alongside the waterbed, while the surrounding water remains unaffected. In comparison, traditional dredging techniques involve vertical transfer of dredged materials throughout the whole water depth.
  2. Dredged sediments remain within the natural environment, avoiding the possible shortage of necessary materials in the ecosystem.
  3. Water injection dredging requires significantly less energy than traditional dredging methods, which involve suction and pumping of heavy materials. As a result, water injection dredgers have a much lower fuel consumption, and therefore, significantly lower CO2 emissions per m3 of dredged materials.

Nevertheless, this method requires very specific conditions for safe and efficient dredging operations. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the environmental impact and conditions in and around the dredging location. Some of the points to consider include:

  • There must be a lower area at the end of the dredging site, where the dredged sediments can be transported to and settle.
  • For water injection dredging to be an efficient dredging method, river currents or tidal flow should be present. This will ease the natural transportation of the materials.
  • Sediments should not contain contaminated materials, as this can spread pollutants and cause harm to the environment.
  • There should not be any sensitive marine life such as shellfish beds, corals or the like in and around the dredging area.

Underwater Dredge Pump

The dredged material is pumped by an underwater dredge pump, which is driven by a hydraulic motor and mounted on a rigid bearing assembly and shaft. As a result, the pump can have a higher pumping flow and of a higher density mixture. Therefore, overall, an underwater dredge pump design offers higher production than a dredge pump mounted in the pontoons.

In addition to this, the control cabin is equipped with all necessities to ensure the operator’s safety and comfort. For example, the cabin is supplied with noise and vibration reduction, ventilation, windshield wipers and an adjustable chair, to name a few. Moreover, air conditioning or a heater is included depending on the geographical location of operation.


All of the dredgers 200 and 250 are self-propelled with two hydraulic thrusters provided only by the best, first-class European brands. As a result, the dredgers are easily maneuverable without any involvement of tugboats or other support. Furthermore, to ensure mobilization support, the dredgers are equipped with tiltable spuds, which can be manually tilted and secured to the deck.

Finally, another important characteristic to highlight, is that the new dredgers 200 and 250 accommodate higher fuel tank capacity. Therefore, the number of necessary refueling intervals for continuous operations is reduced, which allows uninterrupted project work.

Cutter Suction Dredger ECO 200 to UAE

Dredge Yard delivered a multipurpose cutter suction dredger ECO 200 to a real estate developer in the United Arab Emirates for the reshaping and maintenance of existing islands. The ECO 200 dredger will be used for connecting some of the islands and deepening the sea entrance between the islands. Due to current and erosion, the coast of the islands changes with the years. For this reason, it is necessary to perform periodical maintenance to keep the shape of the islands and maintain a pleasant beach. In some areas the beach is flooded by new soft types of sand that makes it difficult for visitors to enjoy the beautiful clear waters of the Emirates. In other places it is necessary to maintain the water depth for yachts and work boats to visit the area. Dredging is the only way to maintain artificial and natural shaped islands and beaches.

The ECO 200 Cutter Suction Dredger

The ECO 200 dredger is equipped with a heavy-duty cutter head and underwater dredge pump for high performance and for pumping a high-density mixture of sand. The high dredging performance will speed up the dredging process to limit the time involved in maintenance. For easy mobilization the dredger is provided with two hydraulic propulsions. The ECO 200 Cutter Suction Dredger can pump the sand up to 1500m and dredge up to 6 meters depth. One of the advantages of the ECO dredger is the use for dredging in small and shallow areas that are difficult for bigger dredgers to enter. The draft of the ECO dredger is only 0.7m. This multipurpose cutter suction dredger is delivered completely assembled and launched into the water by mobile crane.
