Turning Glands
Rotational pipeline connections that enable ±30-45° rotation while maintaining pressure integrity. Essential for hopper dredger suction systems.
What is a Turning Gland?
A turning gland (also known as a swivel joint or rotary joint) is a specialized pipeline component that allows ±30-45° rotation between connected pipe sections while maintaining a pressure-tight seal for slurry transport.
These components are essential in hopper dredger operations where suction pipes must rotate as the vessel moves during dredging. Without a turning gland, the relative motion between vessel and suction pipe would cause pipe damage or seal failure.
Our turning glands feature precision bearings and advanced sealing systems to ensure smooth rotation with minimal friction while handling abrasive slurry at working pressures up to 15 bar.
How Do Turning Glands Work?
A turning gland consists of two main parts: a stationary outer housing and a rotating inner section. These parts are connected through precision bearings that support the rotational loads while allowing smooth turning.
Multiple seal rings between the rotating and stationary parts prevent slurry leakage. The seals are designed to maintain contact under rotation and accommodate the wear from abrasive materials.
Turning Gland Size Range
We offer turning glands in sizes to match hopper dredger suction pipe requirements from small to large vessels.
| Nominal Size | Rotation | Max Pressure | Typical Application | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 400 mm (16") | ±30-45° | 15 bar | Small hopper dredgers | Quote |
| 500 mm (20") | ±30-45° | 15 bar | Small-medium TSHD | Quote |
| 600 mm (24") | ±30-45° | 15 bar | Medium TSHD | Quote |
| 700 mm (28") | ±30-45° | 15 bar | Medium-large TSHD | Quote |
| 800 mm (32") | ±30-45° | 15 bar | Large TSHD | Quote |
